Aretha Franklin Will Be Honored With Postage Stamp, Says Attorney

September 06, 2018 - 9:18 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - By the end of the year, Aretha Franklin could be honored with a postage stamp.
Franklin's attorney, Gregory Reed, said he was negotiating with the U.S. Postal Service back in 2012 to have the Queen of Soul be the first living person to be honored with a stamp.
Reed says paperwork signed by Franklin approving the deal was apparently lost in the shuffle but now, there's a renewed interest in the stamp following her death.
"When you receive a stamp, it's on the same level as the congressional medal and the presidential medal -- that's only for selected individuals," Reed told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "It also would further her legacy as a commitment to excellence in this country."
Calls for a stamp honoring Franklin first came during her funeral, when former Detroit city councilwoman Rev. JoAnn Watson made the suggestion and the crowd went wild.
"I believe that the federal government would do well to have a postage stamp honoring our queen Aretha Franklin," Watson said during her speech. "Honor Aretha in the same way she always honored us."
The stamp advisory committee meets four times a year, and Reed says decision could be made soon.
